One of the most commonly used chemicals in the U.S., benzene is a known carcinogen, and people can be exposed to it in a variety of ways. Workers at refineries and petroleum facilities may risk exposure to elevated levels of benzene. In recent years, a variety of consumer products (especially those used in aerosol form) have also been found to contain benzene. Benzene-contaminated air, water, and soil exposure is alleged in many claims brought by former service members, civilian workers, and family members in Camp Lejeune lawsuits.
Short-term exposure to benzene can result in acute effects such as dizziness, headaches, drowsiness, and irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Long-term exposure may lead to chronic effects such as bone marrow damage, anemia, leukemia, and a weakened immune system. Sudden, high-level exposure can lead to loss of consciousness and death.
It can be difficult to estimate the number of benzene lawsuits that have been filed or how many are currently active, but it’s safe to say plaintiffs number in the tens of thousands. Some litigations have resulted in multi-million-dollar awards and settlements. Because so many people have filed claims, all types of healthcare liens can be expected.
