Elmiron is a drug used to treat pain or discomfort associated with interstitial cystitis, a condition affecting the bladder. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the drug’s maker, claiming that plaintiffs suffered vision problems that can lead to blindness. The drug has come under fire for its potential link to serious eye damage in the forms of macular degeneration, pigmentary maculopathy, and retinal maculopathy.

Although approved by the FDA in 1996, it wasn’t until 2020 that the product’s label was updated to inform users of potential vision problems.

Potential plaintiffs include men and women ages 30 and over, although interstitial cystitis most commonly affects women over the age of 40. Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance liens are the most likely types of repayment obligations to result from any future settlement.
