Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is the most widely used herbicide in the world. Roundup itself is the most commonly used herbicide in American agriculture. Roundup is used on commercial crops, gardens, residential lawns, parks, playgrounds, plant nurseries, golf courses, and more.
Tens of thousands of Roundup users have filed suits claiming that the product caused them serious health problems, the most common being non-Hodgkin lymphoma–a disease in which cancer cells form in the lymph system. Although a significant percentage of lawsuits involve landscapers, gardeners, and farmers, anyone who has used the product is potentially at risk for illness.
Monsanto, the original maker of Roundup, paid out around $11 billion to settle claims before Bayer purchased the company. As of July 2024, Monsanto and Bayer had settled about 100,000 lawsuits and some 54,000 lawsuits remained pending at that time. However, the federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) is still active, and new cases are being filed.
A substantial part of the healthcare liens related to Roundup settlements involve Medicare and private lienholders.
